Chris Brunt To Officially Open 2026 Budget Energy SuperCupNI

Chris experienced the tournament as a player before going on to captain a Premier League club and earn 65 caps for Northern Ireland. That gives him a genuine understanding of what this competition means to young footballers.

Every year, we welcome talented young players from across the world, all looking to test themselves against some of the best opposition they’ll face. Chris’s career shows where those opportunities can lead, and it’s really special that someone who once played in the tournament will now return to officially open it.

The Welcome Parade is one of the defining moments of tournament week. Before a ball has even been kicked, it gives every player the chance to experience the incredible welcome they receive from our local communities. Northern Ireland legend Chris Brunt will officially open this summer’s Budget Energy SuperCupNI, as one of the country’s most accomplished footballers helps launch the 43rd edition of Northern Ireland’s premier international youth football tournament.

The former West Bromwich Albion captain, who earned 65 caps for his country and enjoyed an outstanding career spanning almost two decades in English football, will lead 64 elite boys’ and girls’ teams through the streets of Coleraine on Sunday 26 July before officially declaring the 2026 tournament open at the Coleraine Showgrounds.

Brunt is no stranger to the Budget Energy SuperCupNI. He represented Northern Ireland in the tournament’s Elite Section in 2003, when a side featuring future internationals Steven Davis, Michael McGovern, Dean Shiels and Sammy Clingan faced a Brazil team that included future Manchester City midfielder Fernandinho in front of more than 4,000 spectators at Windsor Park.

He went on to establish himself as one of Northern Ireland’s finest players of the modern era, enjoying a distinguished 13-year spell with West Bromwich Albion, where he made more than 420 appearances, captained the club in the Premier League and became a firm favourite with supporters.

After progressing through Middlesbrough’s academy, Brunt made his breakthrough with Sheffield Wednesday before establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s most consistent midfielders at West Bromwich Albion.

On the international stage, Brunt earned 65 caps for Northern Ireland and played a key role in Michael O’Neill’s side securing qualification for UEFA Euro 2016, ending the nation’s 30-year wait to appear at a major tournament.

Since retiring from professional football in 2021, Brunt has remained heavily involved in the game through coaching and player development with West Bromwich Albion, continuing to help shape the next generation of footballers.

Chris Brunt said: “It’s a real honour to be invited to officially open this year’s Budget Energy SuperCupNI.”

“Growing up, it was one of the tournaments every young footballer wanted to play in. I was fortunate enough to represent Northern Ireland in the Elite Section in 2003, and I still remember playing against a Brazil side packed with outstanding talent.”

“Throughout my career, I played with and against players from all over the world, and whenever the Budget Energy SuperCupNI came up in conversation, people always spoke about the football, the atmosphere and the memories they had of playing here.”

“I also heard recently that 26 players at this summer’s FIFA World Cup had previously played in the tournament. That’s an incredible statistic. It tells you everything about the standard of players and teams the tournament continues to attract.”

“The players taking part this summer will just be focused on enjoying themselves and representing their clubs, counties and countries, but there’ll undoubtedly be some who go on to have fantastic careers in the game.”

“I’m really looking forward to being part of the Welcome Parade, officially opening the tournament and welcoming everyone to Northern Ireland for what I’m sure will be another brilliant week of football.”

“This year’s tournament will also be a particularly poignant one for my family following the sad passing of my father-in-law earlier this year. He was incredibly passionate about the Budget Energy SuperCupNI and served as Treasurer of the County Down teams, so I know just how much the tournament meant to him.”

“It will be a real privilege to officially open this year’s event, and I know he would have been immensely proud to see another special week of football get underway.”

The 2026 Budget Energy SuperCupNI will take place from Sunday 26 July to Friday 31 July, bringing together 64 elite boys’ and girls’ teams from across the globe for one of the world’s premier international youth football tournaments.

Matches will be staged throughout Causeway Coast and Glens, Antrim and Newtownabbey, and Mid and East Antrim, with the Girls’ Section Cup Finals taking place at Dixon Park, Ballyclare on Thursday 30th July and the Boys’ Section Cup Finals returning to The Coleraine Showgrounds on Friday 31st July.

Sam Gamble, Tournament Co-ordinator of the Budget Energy SuperCupNI, said: “We’re delighted that Chris has agreed to officially open this year’s Budget Energy

“We’re looking forward to welcoming Chris, our visiting teams and supporters from around the world for what promises to be another memorable week of international youth football.”

This year’s Budget Energy SuperCupNI will once again welcome some of the biggest names in world football to Northern Ireland, with elite academies including Manchester United, Liverpool, Rangers, Celtic, Tottenham Hotspur, Southampton, Sunderland, Leeds United and West Ham United among those confirmed to compete.

They will be joined by leading clubs from Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, county representative teams and international opposition from across the globe, underlining the tournament’s reputation as one of the world’s leading international youth football competitions.

More than 1,200 players will compete in over 150 fixtures across five age groups during tournament week, as the next generation of footballing talent takes centre stage in Northern Ireland.

Ken O’Byrne Managing Director of Flogas Ireland and Budget Energy, said: “We’re delighted that someone of Chris Brunt’s stature will officially open this year’s Budget Energy SuperCupNI.

“His experience of representing Northern Ireland in the tournament before going on to captain a Premier League club and earn 65 caps for his country reflects the opportunities the competition has created for young players over more than four decades.”

“At Budget Energy, we’re incredibly proud to support a tournament that means so much to so many people across Northern Ireland. Last year, we heard so many brilliant stories about the Welcome Parade, the Opening Ceremony and the atmosphere around tournament week, so we’re really looking forward to being part of that again this summer.”

“Every year, the Budget Energy SuperCupNI brings together outstanding young players from across the world, creates lasting memories for families and delivers a real boost to the local communities that help make the tournament so special.”

“With another incredible week of football ahead, we’re proud to play our part in supporting an event that continues to showcase Northern Ireland, inspire young players and create memories that last a lifetime.”
