A new partnership between Bangor Horticultural Club and Grange Park Primary School has flourished thanks to support from Belfast City Airport’s Community Fund.
The ‘Growing Together’ project has transformed an unused school allotment into a vibrant outdoor learning space that promotes wellbeing, sustainability, and community connection.
With guidance from members of Bangor Horticultural Club, pupils have created thriving gardens while learning beyond the classroom about plant life cycles, sustainability, and food origins.
Ellie McGimpsey, Aviation Development Manager at Belfast City Airport, said:
“At Belfast City Airport, we’re proud to support initiatives that make a real, positive difference within our community.”
“The ‘Growing Together’ project embodies what our Community Fund is about – being a good neighbour, encouraging collaboration, and creating spaces that improve wellbeing and connection.”
“The collaboration has strengthened intergenerational ties within Bangor, fostering a shared sense of pride and purpose. Seeing pupils and members of the horticulture club work side by side to bring this garden to life is a fantastic example of community spirit in action.”
Since its inception in 2009, Belfast City Airport’s Community Fund has donated over £700,000 to 237 local projects, supporting initiatives that enhance wellbeing, promote inclusion, and deliver lasting impact across Greater Belfast and North Down.
Beth Stringer, Foundation Stage Teacher at Grange Park Primary School added:
“This project has provided our pupils with hands-on learning experiences that go far beyond the classroom.”
“From understanding plant life cycles to exploring where food comes from, the children have gained valuable knowledge and confidence – all while contributing to a project that benefits our whole school community.”
“Our sincere thanks go to Belfast City Airport’s Community Fund for making this possible.”
The Community Fund is now open for applications until 12th December 2025.
