CCEA has today welcomed the announcement by Education Minister Paul Givan MLA of a new qualifications policy framework for Northern Ireland’s GCSE and A level qualifications, as part of the TransformED Strategy.
CCEA is committed to working collaboratively with schools and the Department of Education to develop new qualifications that are fit for purpose, rigorous and internationally recognised.
The policy announces a reduction in specification content, overall assessment burden and teacher workload. The new qualifications aim to create more space for deeper learning, broader skills development and more meaningful classroom experiences.
CCEA Chief Executive Gerry Campbell said: “We have been closely involved at every stage of this process, and recognise the genuine desire from teachers, students and school leaders for a qualifications system that better supports teaching and learning.
This development presents a real opportunity to create more time in the classroom for the things that matter most. We are committed to engaging meaningfully with schools, teachers and students as the new specifications are developed.”
CCEA will shortly begin the process of developing new qualifications in line with the policy set by the Department of Education. There will be thorough engagement with subject specialists, teachers and other stakeholders to ensure that new qualifications maintain the rigour and standards that universities, employers and further education providers expect.
Further information on the implementation timeline and engagement opportunities will be published on the CCEA website in the coming weeks.
